Did you drink from streams in Nam? Did you eat raw or under-cooked fish while there? I bought those fish on homemade rolls from mama sanh and drank from I Corp streams. VA doctors have told me for decades that I have odd scaring, cysts, holes and sacs in my liver. They could not (or would not) tell me why.

Hundreds of Vietnam War veterans who’ve died, or are dying, of bile duct cancer, which is also called cholangiocarcinoma caused by those tiny worms they ingested in Vietnam.

The cancer can be caused by parasitic worms, called liver flukes, that are found in fish in the waters of Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries.

Humans who drink from Southeast Asian streams or eat raw or undercooked fish can easily acquire the parasite larvae, which mature in the slender tubes (bile ducts) that carry the digestive fluid bile, and can produce carcinogenic irritation.

Thousands of Americans who served in Vietnam could be at risk for this cancer. Some were service connected.

I flew with the Black Knights in D Troop in 1971-72 (OH-6 "Cayuse" scouts) out of Quang Tri airbase. And, thanks to a squadron commander with an interesting sense of humor and/or a real interest in "developing" his subordinates, I also got to lead a ground cav platoon in the A Shau Valley - where I got lots of unexpected experience and a Purple Heart. Thanks, Colonel!
