Background of the Biography Project

Participation in the Biography Project is voluntary.  The intent, and hope, is that virtually all active members of the squadron will want to participate, as well as many of the families of our deceased brothers.  We trust all active brothers will appreciate the project as an unprecedented and fitting opportunity to advance camaraderie among their fellow brothers.

For the first time, the squadron has a practical way for our brothers to share information on their backgrounds, current activities, key stories about their military and life experiences, and if they prefer to offer, statements concerning their personal legacies and passions.

The Biography Project was conceived in 2009, put through a demonstration phase, and introduced at the reunion of C Troop in Williamsburg VA in September 2010.  As the participants in the demonstration, brothers Mike Allen, Frank Huff and Ed Kosmalski of C Troop were presented with their customized biographies at the reunion, as handsome keepsakes.

The Archive of Biographies

This webpage is the first on-line feature of the squadron’s latest activity in developing, presenting and archiving worthwhile information on our brothers.  The intention of the Archive of Biographies is to contain the biographies on as many of our surviving and deceased brothers as can be prepared and submitted.

Four biographies were placed in the Archive initially. The four entries consisted of the three, two-page demonstration biographies of Mike Allen, Frank Huff and Ed Kosmalski, and the six-page biography of Fred Calvo, also of C Troop.

Brother Fred Calvo was determined to attend the reunion of C Troop in Williamsburg.  Fred and his wife, Gloria, had been faithful attendees at most of the reunions since the inaugural gathering of the squadron in Colorado Springs in 1989.  Fred anticipated his trip to Williamsburg would be to attend his last reunion.  For more than a year prior to the reunion in September 2010, Fred had struggled with cancer and knew his time was short.  After learning about the Biography Project in Williamsburg and seeing firsthand the unique results, Fred wanted to go ahead with his own biography as a departing legacy for his family.
As Fred wished, we were more than willing to collaborate with him in producing a six-page biography to adequately cover the highlights of his life.  Fred’s biography was completed the week of his death at home on November 13, 2010 while surrounded by his loving family. Those of us who knew Fred can well understand his wanting to see his story explained in full.  Fred was right!   His journey through life was truly unique, and overdue in being revealed.  In particular, Fred desired the story of his life to be documented in biographic form for the benefit of his five grandchildren.  Fred’s original biography was subsequently condensed to two pages, custom framed and specially presented to Gloria and her family members who attended the 2011 squadron reunion in Louisville.  Gloria prefers the full-length, original version of Fred’s biography to appear in the archive, where it will remain accessible to all of Fred’s surviving brothers.

How to Access Individual Biographies

Presently, there is only one index option that features the names of brothers listed alphabetically by troop assignment.  Different indexes will be offered as more biographies are added to the Archive, necessitating further options to help in identifying individual biographies.

Access to the biographies in the Archive is done by going to the Index of Biographies, reviewing the names of the brothers,  and clicking on any one name at a time to bring up and read the brother’s biography.  Go back to the index to repeat the selection of another biography for reading.

We anticipate adding a key word search capability to the Archive in the near future.   In this way, all the biographies in the Archive that meet the criteria of a search request will be identified for reading.  The information in each biography matched to a search request will be highlighted for the reader’s ease of quickly focusing in on the specific word, phrase, sentence or paragraph of interest.

Need for User Comments

General comments or suggestions for specific improvements pertaining to any part of this webpage, the Biography Project or the Archive of Biographies will be gladly accepted and considered by the project webmaster, Mike Cook.  We wish to make every effort in maximizing the acceptance and usefulness of this database for all our brothers and their families.
